Welcome to Modern Horse Breeding!
The Lower Saxony State Stud Celle
The Lower Saxony State Stud Celle has always been a pioneer of modern practices. Whether it involves promoting regional horse breeding by providing high-quality stallions, refining riding horse breeding through the introduction of English Thoroughbreds, organizing traditional stallion parades and public presentations of state-owned stallions, founding the first stallion testing station on German soil, or implementing modern biotechnologies such as artificial insemination and embryo transfer—we seamlessly combine traditional horse breeding with modern advancements!
A Treasure of Experience
The Celle State Stud was founded by decree on July 27, 1735, by Elector George II of Hanover, who was also King of Great Britain. By around 1800, the stud already housed 100 stallions, which were annually sent to approximately 50 covering stations.
Today, the stud maintains a stock of 120 active state-owned stallions, including seven English Thoroughbreds and one Anglo-Arabian. Additionally, each year, 30 three-year-old Hanoverian young stallions from the Lower Saxony Stallion Rearing Stud in Hunnesrück undergo an 11-month training program at the stallion testing station in Adelheidsdorf. At the age of 3 ½ years, they complete the stallion performance test.
